M3U Playlist vs Xtream Codes: Which Should You Use?

Last updated: October 2026 · Written by the Varesteam4K team · two ways to sign in, and when each one is right

The short answer

Use Xtream Codes whenever your player offers it. It brings the channel list, the 7-day TV guide, the on-demand library and catch-up. An M3U playlist URL usually brings only the channel list. They connect to the same service and the same streams — the difference is how much the player is allowed to ask for.

What an M3U playlist is

An M3U file is a plain text list of channel names and stream addresses — a format that predates IPTV by decades and was originally used for music playlists. In IPTV it arrives as a long URL that, when opened, returns the text file your player reads.

It is simple and universal: VLC will open it, every player understands it, and nothing about it is proprietary. What it is not is interactive. The player downloads the list and that is the whole conversation. If a channel is added tomorrow, the list has to be fetched again.

What Xtream Codes is

Xtream Codes is an API rather than a file. Instead of one list, your player gets a live connection to the service and can ask it questions: give me the channel groups, give me the guide for the next seven days, give me the film library, give me what aired on this channel yesterday.

You get three details instead of one URL: a server address, a username and a password.

What you actually get, side by side

Feature M3U playlist Xtream Codes
Live channels Yes Yes
7-day TV guide (EPG) Often missing or partial Yes, complete
Movies and series library Usually not Yes, searchable
Catch-up TV No Yes, on supported channels
Channel groups Flat or poorly grouped Properly grouped
New channels appear Only when the list is refreshed Automatically
Works in VLC Yes No
Setup fields One URL Three fields

Read that table once and the recommendation is obvious. The only column where M3U wins is compatibility with software that was never designed for IPTV.

When the plain M3U link is still right

  • Testing. Paste an M3U URL into VLC on a laptop and you know within fifteen seconds whether a service is alive. It is the fastest sanity check there is.
  • A player that only takes M3U. Some Smart TV apps and older devices offer nothing else.
  • Odd hardware. Network media players and some recording setups speak M3U and nothing more.
  • A quick second screen where you do not care about the guide.

In every other situation, Xtream Codes is the better choice, and it is what we send by default.

Signing in with Xtream Codes

In your player, look for “Login with Xtream Codes API” or just “Xtream Codes”. Then:

  1. Server URL — the complete address including http:// and the port, for example http://server.address:8080. No trailing slash.
  2. Username — exactly as sent, capitals included.
  3. Password — the same.

If the login is rejected, check the server URL before anything else. A missing port number causes the overwhelming majority of failed logins, and the error message almost never says so.

Using an M3U URL

Choose “Load Your Playlist or File/URL”, paste the whole URL, and give it a name. Paste it complete — these URLs are long and carry your credentials inside them as parameters, so a truncated copy fails silently.

Treat both like a password

Your M3U URL contains your username and password in plain text. Anyone who has the link has your subscription. The same goes for Xtream Codes details. So:

  • Do not post either in a public forum, a review or a screenshot.
  • Do not share them with friends — extra simultaneous streams will cut you off, not them.
  • If you think they have leaked, message us and we will reissue.

Which players take which

Player Xtream Codes M3U
IPTV Smarters Pro Yes (use this) Yes
TiviMate Yes (use this) Yes
IBO Player Pro Yes Yes
XCIPTV Yes Yes
VLC No Yes
MAG box Portal address instead No

MAG boxes are the exception to all of this: they use a portal URL tied to the box’s MAC address. Send us the MAC from the box’s system screen and we register it at our end.

If something is missing

Channels but no guide? You are almost certainly on M3U. Delete the profile and re-add with Xtream Codes. No films or series? Same cause, same fix. Everything loads but stutters? That is not the login type — work through the buffering checklist instead.

Next steps

When you order, we send Xtream Codes details by default and an M3U URL on request. Set up with Xtream Codes in IPTV Smarters Pro or TiviMate, and keep the M3U link for testing. Not ordered yet? Ask for a trial and we will send both so you can see the difference on your own TV.
